The Hidden Sauce That Makes Stories Stick

You will often read that storytelling is simply about conflict. While this is true, relying on that definition will not enable you to move an audience. The conflict must be about something that truly matters. The challenge for any speaker is moving past their own experience to find the universal elements that command attention across diverse groups of people.

One of the most effective ways to find these elements is to audit the stories you already love: your favorite movies, series, or even brands.

Ten years ago, I began asking why certain stories, particularly classic literature, remain relevant centuries later. Beyond the fact that they are taught in schools, there is a fundamental reason why these narratives were deemed worth preserving. When I analyzed hundreds of stories from different eras and cultures, I looked at what they were actually about. I found that while every story is unique, the underlying things characters fight for fall into a very small number of categories.

The Architecture of Narrative Stakes

What I discovered through this audit is what I call "Story Stakes." When you identify the stake, you identify why the conflict matters. Because we are bombarded with messages, our bodies and emotions filter out the noise and only retain the ones that touch these deep-seated stakes. The messages that stick are those that tap into these fundamental categories of human concern.

In the world of sales and marketing, storytelling is rarely subtle. Brands that succeed are never shy about painting a clear conflict. They position their hero and villain in a battle over something vital.

The Skill of Narrative Auditing

Understanding the stake is what allows a speaker to move from a "personal anecdote" to a "universal truth." When you understand these categories, you no longer have to guess what will interest your audience; you can design your message around the themes that have moved humans for millennia.

At Crave Speaking, these specific categories of stakes are a core part of our specialized training. Identifying them is the fastest way to accelerate your ability to connect with a room. By learning to recognize what is truly at stake in any given situation, you gain a massive advantage in how you frame your product, your service, or your vision. You stop hoping people will listen and start using the structural triggers that ensure they have no choice but to pay attention.
